Sktchy #30faces30days Watercolor Challenge (April 2024)
In March, I was scrolling on instagram, and saw an old friend from grad school (hi Tiffany!) talking about a watercolor painting challenge hosted by sktchy.com. Every day in April, there would be a new reference photo and a ~1 hour video lesson to go along with it. I’d always enjoyed watercolor, but hadn’t done much lately - I figured I’d probably learn some new tips and tricks, and the accountability of posting my work to the community would be good for me… so I signed myself right on up!
Well, I had SO! MUCH! FUN! with this challenge! All of the instructors had different styles and different ways of teaching, but I enjoyed every lesson. Sometimes I tried to emulate what they were doing, and sometimes I just did my own thing, but I learned a little something new in each class. I draw all day on my computer for work, but there’s just something different about making a real painting with real paints on real paper (although I certainly did miss my undo button at times!). These were all done in about an hour (but there are a few that I just got so caught up in I kept painting after the class ended), so I consider them more watercolor sketches than finished pieces, and there are definitely some I think are less successful than others… but as a whole, I’m pretty proud of them!
