Cancer Season

I have friends who are very into their, like, Virgo-ness, or who are sure to let everyone know when it’s Gemini season, but I’m not that into astrology myself. I’m a Cancer, but I don’t identify strongly with my sign. Moody, overly sensitive homebody? Not me!

Despite my skepticism, the internet/social media informed me that it’s currently Cancer season. I was curious what that meant, so I did a little googling and learned that Cancer season is a time for introspection, tapping into your feelings and intuition; focusing on family and strengthening relationships; and creating a comfortable and nurturing home environment. Hmm… okay, I like the sound of that… and I’ve been making some shifts in my life that kind of fit into those themes lately. Oh my goodness, am I embracing Cancer season?

The biggest of the aforementioned life-shifts is that I’m going from full- to part-time tomorrow (a lot of introspection went into this decision). I’ve worked at the same company, in roughly the same position, for over 18 years, so it feels like a huge change to me - even though I’ll still be working there, just a bit less! This will give me more time with my kiddos (family focus): we’ve got fun adventures planned for the rest of the summer, and I’ll be able to sign off of work in time to pick up my oldest from school once she starts kindergarten in August! It will also be nice to have a little more mental-bandwidth for other things that are important to me, but that I’ve kind of been neglecting lately. I’m looking forward to more painting and exercise, more making things with my hands, and spending more time outside. I also made a list of home and garden projects that I’m hoping to get through in the next few weeks (in order to create a comfortable and nurturing environment). Okay, I guess I’m going ALL IN on Cancer season!

This star-shaped hole punch pleases me immensely!

Here are my lists of projects - I’ll do a little check-in at the end of the month and share what I did or didn’t accomplish. I was going to make myself a big sticker chart but then I remembered I had this cool star-shaped hole punch, so I made myself punch cards instead, and I think it will be very satisfying to punch things out!

First of all, I want to paint in a more focused way and practice piano every day. I’m also going to try to close my rings (on my Apple watch) every day in July (but I didn’t make a punch card for that).

The house project list includes:

  • Come up with a storage solution for out of season clothes

  • Organize pantry

  • Front yard clean up (weed, move some plants around, add some stepping stones)

  • Back yard clean up (weed, clean out drainage area)

  • Fix up basement gym area

  • Fix up basement sewing/crafting/puzzling area

  • Organize garage (we haven’t been able to park our car in there for over a year, it’s terrible)

  • Organize my closet/clothes/shoes/accessories

  • Finish decorating daughter’s room

  • Finish decorating son’s room

  • Organize my office/art studio

  • Do something cool with the pile of bricks leftover from renovation (raised garden bed? path? edging?)

And my personal project list includes:

  • Frame photos (I have a bunch of empty frames right now)

  • Catch up on our Chatbooks (my kids love these but I haven’t made one since last November - so behind!)

  • Edit China trip video & pics

  • Come up with a system for dinners

  • Mend the pile of clothes that need mending

  • Sew a dress that I’ll actually want to wear

  • Build out this website - homepage, portfolio, about me page

  • Make preschool memory book for daughter

  • Plan & prep for daughter’s birthday party

  • Start lifting weights again - devise and stick to a training plan

  • Make a station in the kitchen for bread-making

  • Start learning/speaking Chinese (with kids)
